Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia - Annapolis Valley Project Volunteer Committees
(June 2010)

It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Committee involvement is a great way to meet new people and make an important contribution to Habitat for Humanity HRM! Committees have different requirements and commitment, depending on responsibilities, time of year and ongoing projects. If you would like to more about any of the committees, contact volunteer@habitathrm.com specifying the committee(s) of interest. Please note that not all committees are recruiting at this time and some are looking for specific skill sets to complement existing membership. However, committee requirements are subject to change. Interested volunteers will be contacted as openings become available.

FAITH RELATIONS
The Faith Relations Committee seeks to strengthen community support of the affiliate's work by gaining volunteers, prayer, and financial resources from faith communities in the region. The Faith Relations Committee will work in partnership with faith communities to create opportunities for partnering on builds, providing site support, and participating throughout the year.

FAMILY SERVICES
The Family Services Committee supports Habitat partner families from selection through home ownership. Members responsible for family selection carry out HFH's vision by defining the population in need of decent, affordable housing, developing processes and policies for selecting those in greatest need, providing outreach and marketing materials to potential families and organizations supporting families in need. The committee also ensures that section processes use objective, legal and non-discriminatory selection criteria. Committee members distribute and review application and help applicants complete them. In its role as liaison between the affiliate and its partner families, the Family Services Committee provides families with a mutual support system, educational opportunities, and a forum for discussions regarding home-ownership and HFH policies and procedures, and develops materials and strategies for improving the experience of participating families.

FINANCE COMMITTEE
The Finance Committee assists the Treasurer, who has the authority and responsibility for the safekeeping of the funds and securities of the organization. Committee members, working with the Treasure, will maintain reports on the financial state, prepare and monitor budget, ensure yearly audit and examine and review accounts and accounting procedures of affiliate staff and representatives.

FUND DEVELOPMENT
The Fund Development Committee works with the Executive Director and/or Fund Development Manager to support funding requirements of the organization. This involves creating a fund development plan, tracking results and evaluating outcomes of fund development activities. Committee responsibilities include design, planning and/or implementing events, soliciting individual and corporate donations, and seeking new fund development opportunities within the community. The FD Committee will work closely with the PR Committee for promotion and marketing of events and with the Volunteer Committee for operational support.

PUBLIC RELATIONS
The Public Relations Committee is responsible for sharing HFH's mission with all stakeholders, including partners, families, volunteers and all members of the community. The goal of the Committee is to continually seek to raise and maintain awareness of HFH's work in ways that properly reflect the mission, beliefs and image of the organization. The PR committee will develop an annual PR plan, solicit and schedule appropriate media coverage for events and activities, work with other committees to provide materials such as brochures and fact sheets, identify and incorporate a variety of traditional and new media tools to reach all members of the community.

SHE
The Safety Health and Environment (SHE) Committee is responsible for managing the implementation, administration and continuous improvement of the HFHC SHE Program at the affiliate level. This will be successfully achieved using the SHE Management System (MS), SHE Operating Procedures (SOP's), and Safe Work Procedures (SWP's), along with processes, forms, documentation, appropriate affiliate resources, and management commitment. The SHE committee will work with the Volunteer Coordinator and/or Volunteer Committee to plan, schedule, deliver and evaluate SHE training for staff and volunteers, coordinate build site SHE inspections and evaluation, and ensure regular SHE audits.

VOLUNTEER
The Volunteer Committee exists to identify, recruit, orient, utilize, retain and recognize volunteers required to carry out the ministry of HFH. The Committee is responsible for ensuring the program is volunteer-friendly and conducive to a rewarding experience to maintain the highest possible level of participation. The VC will work with the Volunteer Coordinator to maintain a database of volunteers, develop and review resource materials, implement volunteer recognition programs. Members of this committee will work closely with other committees to identify and supply necessary volunteer support.
